Chicken N Pickle Marks 10 Years of Community-Driven Pickleball

Ten years before pickleball became a national phenomenon, Kansas City entrepreneur Dave Johnson saw an opportunity to create something larger than a sports venue. In 2016, he launched Chicken N Pickle, blending chef-driven dining, social gathering spaces, and pickleball courts into what would become one of the industry’s first “eatertainment” concepts. This summer, the company is celebrating its 10th anniversary as it reflects on a decade of growth, community impact, and category leadership.

From its original location in North Kansas City, Chicken N Pickle has expanded to 13 locations across the United States, helping pioneer a business model that combines recreation, hospitality, and social engagement. Long before pickleball emerged as America’s fastest-growing sport, company leadership recognized the game’s unique ability to bring together players of all ages and skill levels, making it a natural centerpiece for a community-focused destination.

The company’s growth has been accompanied by a significant commitment to local communities. According to Chicken N Pickle, the brand has invested more than $6.5 million in charitable causes, supported thousands of nonprofit organizations, and hosted numerous fundraising and community events through its “Our Hearts Are Local” initiative. The company says each location is intentionally designed to reflect and serve its surrounding community rather than operate as a standardized entertainment venue.

While pickleball remains central to the brand’s identity, Chicken N Pickle has evolved into a broader lifestyle and hospitality platform. Today’s offerings include corporate events, family celebrations, wellness programming, adaptive pickleball initiatives, seasonal activations, and a robust food-and-beverage operation. The concept has also attracted high-profile supporters and investors, including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, along with professional tennis player Jack Sock.

Looking ahead, company leaders say future expansion will continue to be guided by the same mission that launched the brand a decade ago: creating spaces where people can connect face-to-face through shared experiences. As pickleball facilities continue to proliferate nationwide, Chicken N Pickle’s anniversary serves as a reminder that the sport’s commercial success has been fueled as much by community-building as competition.
